The counting for the Goa Panchayat elections is underway and the results of the 185 bodies are expected to be announced on Monday.

Panaji, May 6 : The counting for the Goa Panchayat elections is underway and the results of the 185 bodies are expected to be announced on Monday.

The counting is being held for two days, starting this morning at all the 11 Taluk headquarters. Fifty-four candidates have already been elected unopposed.

The block development officers and joint mamlatdars have been appointed as executive magistrates to oversee the law and order situation. One observer in each of the eleven talukas has been on duty to oversee the counting process.

Polling to elect representatives for 1,436 wards took place on Saturday. About sixty-five percent turnout was recorded in what would decide the fate of 5650 candidates, who are fighting as independents and by forming their own panels.

Out of 1,436, wards, 477 are reserved for women, 180 for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 296 for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Polls were held less than a month before the elections to the 40-member Goa Assembly slated for June 2.
