You voted for Mulayam, he cheated you: Rahul Gandhi

Coming down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh Government and accusing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav of indulging in mere power game, Amethi Congress MP Rahul Gandhi today said that Yadav had breached the trust of the people.

Ghosi/Rudrapur (Uttar Pradesh), May 4 : Coming down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh Government and accusing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav of indulging in mere power game, Amethi Congress MP Rahul Gandhi today said that Yadav had breached the trust of the people.

"You voted for them, and they cheated you. Ruled over the state and never thought of your welfare. To top it all, corruption and lawlessness are the order of the day in Uttar Pradesh," Rahul told a public rally at Rudrapur in Deoria.

Commenting on the pathetic scenario of sugar mills in the state, Rahul said: "UP was once known for its sugar mills, but now all of them are closed and young people are roaming round the country in search of jobs."

Calling on the youth of the state to take the lead, he said: "We need to change this, and if anyone can change this, they are the youth of the state, they will have to come forward and work for the change."

Rahul also blamed the previous non-Congress Government for the underdevelopment of the state.

"The only reason for the backwardness of the area is the successive governments of the state which never even thought of development and the welfare of the state and rather kept dividing you for their own interest," he said.

Later in the day, while addressing a public gathering in Ghosi, Rahul said that Mulayam Singh has done nothing for sugarcane farmers and weavers.

"The State Government has not done anything for you. Look at the situation of the weavers, they are in a pathetic condition and still the State Government never thought about them. What is it doing? When there was a problem with sugarcane farmers of the state, I had to take the issue up in Parliament," Rahul said.

The Amethi MP reiterated that the Samajwadi Party-led Government in the state has failed miserably in using the development funds provided by the Central Government. The Centre has been trying its best to help UP develop, but the State Government is not bothered about the same, he added.

"The Central Government has given huge funds to the state for its development, but one fails to understand where is all the money going. The money does not belong to either the State Government or the Central Government, it's yours, you need to know about the expenditure," he said.

Asserting that "gundagardi" has become the order of the day in the state, which lacks "roads, electricity, schools and hospitals", the 37-year-old Congress leader said: "We need to change this, and this and the power, which will do it, is the power of the youth. They will have to take the responsibility and come ahead".

People attending the meeting said Rahul factor was the reason for their presence there.

"We are going to support the Congress Party after a long gap of 15 years and this is because of Rahul Gandhi. He is so energetic and natural, "said Channu Lal Sonkar, a visitor

"He is the only leader who talks about development. All others come and talk about caste and religion," said Kamal Sharma, another voter.
