Swedish Foreign Minister meets PM

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today and discussed several bilateral and international issues of mutual interest to both countries.

New Delhi, May 4 : Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today and discussed several bilateral and international issues of mutual interest to both countries.

Bildt is in India on a two-day visit that ends today. This is the first visit of a Swedish foreign minister to India since 1993.On Thursday, the two countries inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for deepening defence ties and on India's purchase of the Swedish-made Bofors guns. The Bofors performed credibly in the 1999 Indo-Pak Kargil war. An Indian Army requisition for further procurement of the guns is stalled for a decade over a payoff scam related to the first purchase.Bildt is said to have discussed with Defence Minister A K Antony an impending Indian Air Force (IAF) order for 126 combat jets, for which the Swedish JAS-39 is a contender.
