Mercury soars in Gujarat during wedding season

Gujarat is reeling under heat wave, like several parts in the north and west of the country.

Ahmedabad, May 4 : Gujarat is reeling under heat wave, like several parts in the north and west of the country.

It is the marriage season in Ahmedabad, and the heat is keeping most shoppers away from the marketplaces.

"We have to go out in the heat to shop. We cannot help that as the marriage season is on. We cannot go out in the night to shop, as it is not safe for women to do so," said Nimmi Chauhan, a customer, who came out at noon for shopping for a marriage in the family.

Roadside cold-drink stalls selling lemonade, ice candies, colas and ice-cream have come to the rescue of the shoppers.

"The temperature is pretty high, but we somehow manage with headscarves and hand socks. We are just waiting for the monsoon outbreak, so the rain rescues us," said Chauhan. The weatherman has said that the mercury across Gujarat would soar in coming days."Temperatures are expected to soar in the rest of the State as well, by around one to two degrees. From May 1 to May 5 the average temperature in Ahmedabad is expected to be 41 degrees Centigrade; it might rise to 42.8 degree Centigrade. In rest of the State, temperatures are higher than normal, though less than 40 degrees Celsius," said M H Tomar, Chief of the Ahmedabad Meteorological Department. Most of the Northern India is in the grip of a severe heat wave, with Punjab and Rajasthan recording temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
