BSP MP Umakant suspended after arrest in land grab case

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Umakant Yadav was arrested today on charges of demolishing shops and houses to grab a piece of land in Palia Mafi village in Uttar Pradeshs Azamgarh District.

Lucknow, May 30 : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Umakant Yadav was arrested today on charges of demolishing shops and houses to grab a piece of land in Palia Mafi village in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh District.

A case has been registered against Yadav, the MP from Machlishahar in Jaunpur District, his son, Dinesh and five of his supporters for Tuesday's demolition.

Police arrested Yadav outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's official Kalidas Marg residence in Lucknow and lodged in the Hazratganj Police station.

In protest, villagers blocked vehicular movement on the Lucknow -Azamgarh Highway.

Yadav has since been suspended from the party.

Yadav claimed that he is being framed in a false case, as "I was getting my own land cleared off. This is a part of a political conspiracy against me", he added.

According to reports Yadav allegedly wanted to grab the land where the shops and houses were built.

When the owners refused to sell, Yadav and his supporters brought a bulldozer to the site and demolished the newly constructed shops and houses.

When a large number of people gathered to protest, Umakant and his supporters fired in the air to disperse them, and then escaped.

A historysheeter, Yadav has cases of murder, abduction and extortion registered against him.
