Two policemen were among six killed in police firing on thousands of Gujjars demanding Scheduled Tribe status for their community in Dausa here this morning.

Dausa (Rajasthan), May 29 : Two policemen were among six killed in police firing on thousands of Gujjars demanding Scheduled Tribe status for their community in Dausa here this morning.

The Gujjar community is included in the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) list.

The police opened fire to disperse the 2,000-strong protesting Gujjars, when they turned violent.

The protestors blocked the Jaipur-Agra Highway.

The authorities have deployed 20,000 personnel from the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary along four state highways.

Several policemen were injured in the violence. The condition of a few of them was stated to be critical.

Additional forces have been called in to deal with the situation.

Rajasthan Home Minister G C Kataria has convened an emergency meeting to review the situation.
