Bangalore based Manipal Group today announced its foray into Healthcare Retail under the brand name Manipal Cure and Care (MCC). Manipal Cure and Care will offer world-class Healthcare products and services driven by health care professionals and focus on Preventive, Wellness and Beauty.

The new company formed with a seed capital of INR 50 Crores plans to set up 50 outlets in the next 4 years. The first two outlets will come up in Bangalore and Ahmedabad in July while a total of 10 will be functional by end of this fiscal. Manipal Cure and Care is also planning to launch outlets in NCR, Bombay, Pune, Hyderabad to name a few in current year.

Wellness and preventive medicine is expected to exceed 1 trillion USD by 2010 worldwide and yet to be seriously looked at in India. The Manipal Cure and Care retail outlets will be established in two different formats across Malls, Mega-cites, Health cities, Hyper Market and High streets with a focus on customers who are time pressed.

Dr. Ramdas M Pai, Chairman, Manipal Education and Medical Group; said "Despite the old adage of preventive medicine being better than curative, it has still not found its root in Indian society. We are reactive and not proactive, when it comes to health problems. At Manipal Cure and Care, our endeavour is to offer products and services, along with targeted programmes that will specifically educate people on wellness aspects and create awareness about the economical and emotional burden of having a sick member in hospital."

Dr. Ranjan Pai, CEO, Manipal Education and Medical Group; added, "Retailing is the next big industry that is taking off in India. We feel that there is a huge space in the wellness, preventive and beauty & cosmetic care. We plan to integrate our skills in healthcare to ride the wave of retail boom. As the Indian market matures, and with more emphasis on preventive and wellness, we are confident that retail healthcare will be viable business proposition. Going forward we will also look at like minded people to join us as franchisees. "

Mr. Somnath Das, Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Cure and Care elaborated on the uniqueness of its proposition, "There are plenty of things that will be introduced for the first time in India. These include A-M-P-L-E (Allergies, Medical History, Past History, List of Medication, Emergency Number), CIMS (Cumulative Index of Medical Specialties), Customer Charter, EMR (Electronic Medical Record), error proofing methodology and single episode of care in less than 45 min to name a few. Our offering will be a mix of services and products. Manipal Cure and Care is also the first to provide qualitative monitoring of healthcare by focusing on prevention and wellness, not illness." We aim at offering an in-house pharmacy that can cater to the neighbourhood needs.

Dr. Satish Amarnath, Medical Director, Manipal Cure and Care said, "The preventive services on offer will be Health Checks and walk-in flexi checks like diabetic check, cardiac check, liver check, HIV screening, Lung Check and Vaccinations. The wellness services will include Immunizations, Antenatal care, baby clinic, adolescent clinic, eye care, hormonal management, dietary counseling and sexual health advise. The beauty and cosmetology section will offer services like cosmetic dermatology, dentistry and skin piercing to name a few. The outlets will have consultants from the fields of General Medicine, Dermatology, Dentists, Pediatricians, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Endocrinologists and Lab Medicine among others."

Dr. Satish further added. "On product side, besides the pharmacy and the Manipal's own brands, Manipal Cure and Care is in talks with leading sports personalities to launch branded sports products. It will also stock products of leading brands like Bausch and Lomb, Essilor and Zeiss for vision care; Colgate and Oral B in dental care; Vichy and Truste for skin care; brands from USFDA approved plants in Nutraceuticals; Lifestyle products from OSIM and personal healthcare products from Johnson and Johnson and Abbot. It will also provide health and life insurance products from ICICI Prudential and ICICI Lombard. More such tie-ups are on anvil."

Manipal Cure and Care has tied up with Oscar Murphy International to offer world class soft skills training in retails, for even doctors, nurses and paramedics. The same skills can be used by other retailers as well once Manipal University offers it as a certified course. It will endeavour to optimize resources establishing Hub and Spoke with customers from Target customer Footfalls - Corporate and near by community.

It is already working with Australian Standards of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) to bring in world class quality management systems. Customer charters will be put up in every store in order to match their expectations and our performance.

The Manipal Cure and Care outlets will draw upon over half a century of Manipal group's experience in healthcare, the services will be protocol driven and delivered by well trained, customer focused Healthcare professionals deploying evidence based practice.
