Rajat Nagrath extortion case: Abu Salem to appear before Delhi court

Underworld don Abu Salem will appear before a Delhi court today in connection with the Rajat Nagrath extortion case.

New Delhi, May 28 : Underworld don Abu Salem will appear before a Delhi court today in connection with the Rajat Nagrath extortion case.

Salem was remanded in seven-day police custody on May 22.

The Delhi Police needed Salem for interrogation over his role in trying to extort Rs 10 million via his henchmen from south Delhi businessman Rajat Nagrath in July 2002. Nagrath owns a firm Allied Communications in East of Kailash.

Salem is also involved in a similar case. The other pertains to his alleged role in an extortion call to Ashok Gupta, a businessman residing at Greater Kailash-I in South Delhi, in which Rs.50 million was demanded from him as protection money in April 2002.

The third one pertains to a conspiracy to eliminate rival don Babloo Shrivastava.

Salem was brought to Delhi from Mumbai where he was lodged in Authur Road Jail. Salem was arrested in India after his extradition from Portugal in November 2005 for his alleged role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and several other cases.

Recently, the Supreme Court had granted bail to companion of Salem and former Bollywood actress Monica Bedi in connection with the fake passport case pending against her in Andhra Pradesh.

However, Bedi will continue to be in jail as she faces similar charged in another case which is pending against her in Bhopal.

Monica was extradited from Lisbon in Portugal on November 11, 2005 along with Salem.
