Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy will visit Goa today to meet election officials ahead of the June 2 Assembly polls in the state.

Panaji, May 25 : Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy will visit Goa today to meet election officials ahead of the June 2 Assembly polls in the state.

N Gopalaswamy will be accompanied by Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and Deputy Election Commissioner R Bhattacharya.

In April, he had visited to oversee arrangements for the assembly elections. But he did not satisfied with the implementation of model code of conduct in the state.

Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Wilfred de Souza and the leader of the opposition Manohar Parrikar are among the 202 candidates who are in the fray for the election.

The BJP is fielding 33 candidates, the Indian National Congress 32, Nationalist Congress Party 6, Communist Party of India 3, Communist Party of India (Marxist) 1, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak 26 , Janata Dal (Secular) 12, United Goans Democratic Party 11, Shivsena 7, Save Goa Front 17, Republican Party of India (A) 4, Goa Su-Raj Party 1 and Independent 49.

Counting of votes for the 40-seat State Assembly will take place on June 5, with the results expected the same day.

The Election Commission has fixed June 8 as the date before which the election process will be completed.
