New Delhi May 25 : Consumers of the country got a sigh of relief as retail prices of almost all essential commodities for the week ending May 22 remain steady, except variation in prices of some commodities.
"Retail prices of most of the essential commodities at four main metropolitan centres have remained stable," a Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution release said.
At Delhi, prices of mustard oil and potato declined; price of loose tea increased; and prices of wheat, flour, rice, sugar, gram, onion, vanaspati, tur dal, packed salt and groundnut oil remained steady.
As part of measures taken by the Central Government to check rise in prices of essential commodities, zero duty on import of pulses has been further extended upto March 31, 2009.
For the last few months, soaring prices of essential commodities is playing havoc with the consumers' daily budget.
