Koradi thermal plant shut down due to workers strike

A 1050 MW Koradi thermal power plant in the outskirts of Nagpur has been shut down on Thursday following a strike by workers to protest against the arrest of two engineers for the death of a worker inside the plant premises.

Nagpur, May 24 : A 1050 MW Koradi thermal power plant in the outskirts of Nagpur has been shut down on Thursday following a strike by workers to protest against the arrest of two engineers for the death of a worker inside the plant premises.

All the seven units of the Koradi Thermal Power Station were closed after all the engineers and workers decided to stay away from work from Wednesday night against the arrest.

The engineers were arrested after a labourer working for a private contractor lost his life in an accident in the coal-handling plant on Wednesday. The strike has left Nagpur and its neighbouring villages into darkness.

Maharashtra was already reeling under a 1000 MW power deficit.

"We have had an accidental death here when a labourer working under a contractor lost his life. The police have filed an FIR against two of our engineers.o, all the unions have gone on strike against this," said S. K. Dev Chief General Manager of Koradi Power Station.

Tension prevailed in the power plant premises throughout the day with the labourers accusing the engineers and the contractor for the death of the worker, forcing police to arrest the engineers.

The engineers alleged that the arrests were arbitrary, without any investigation, and in protest closed down all the generation units.

"The police did not go behind what had happened and conducted no investigation. Two engineers have been framed under section 304 and therefore all the unions have joined to protest. We are on strike from the night of May 23 and demand withdrawal of section 304 that has been registered against the two engineers," said Narendra Jaronde, General Secretary of Maharashtra State Power Workers' Association.

The workers are demanding release of the arrested engineers, as it was done without proper investigation. They also want that the practice of 'contract labour' should be stopped as contractors employ unskilled workers in a highly specialised area.

Koradi Thermal Power Station also caters to Mumbai, besides the National power grid. The shut down could badly affect the power situation in the city.
