Exide Industries Limited, the country's premium battery maker has received the prestigious TERI Corporate Environmental Award for the year 2006-07. The award which is given out by The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) was presented by Shri P Chidambaram, Hon'ble Finance Minister, Government of India and was received by Mr S B Ganguly, Chairman Emeritus of Exide Industries Limited today.

This annual award which has been instituted by TERI is one of the most prestigious awards which recognizes outstanding achievements by corporates in various fields. The jury panel adjudicating the awards is headed by Justice J S Verma, former Chief Justice of India. Exide has received this award for its magnificent work for 'Corporate leadership towards Environment Management & Sustainable Initiatives' carried out at its plant in Hosur in Tamil Nadu.

Environment has always been an area of importance for Exide and it has over the years given it the highest importance in its scheme of things. The plant at Hosur has taken several initiatives in this regard with thrust on areas relating to air, water, waste management, green belt development, etc. Each area has been earmarked with a specific plan of action for the year.

Some of the work done in environment management at its plant in Hosur include well engineered rain water harvesting system, greening the planet program through greenbelt development, state of the art systems for clean air emission and hazardous waste management. These initiatives have their specific time-bound plans which are monitored closely on an ongoing basis.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr S B Ganguly, Chairman Emeritus, Exide Industries Limited said, "What makes us proud today is the fact that we have received this award for our initiatives in environmental management, an area which we are very focused upon. The award is a recognition to all our employees especially at our plant in Hosur. We propose to create this achievement by our Hosur plant as a benchmark for other plants as well as divisions to emulate."
