Srinagar May 22 : Five militants, including a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) district commander, were gunned down in two separate operations by the Jammu and Kashmir police in Pulwama District today.
Police, assisted by security forces, eliminated two JeM militants at Kesrigam in Pulwama and three others at Chak Matrigam in Shopian. One soldier also died in the Kesrigam encounter.
According to Pulwama ASP Abdul Qayoom, a cordon and search operation was launched in Kesrigam village by Pulwama Police, along with 53 and 55 Rashtriya Rifle, following information of the militants in the area.
The search operation turned into an encounter when militants opened indiscriminate fire at police, which was duly retailed, he added.
Qayoom further said that two militants belonging to JeM identified as Wasim, resident of Pakistan, and Arshid Dar, resident of Aglar, Pulwama were eliminated in the encounter.
He revealed that Wasim was the District Commander of the outfit and was involved in almost all the cop killings that took place last year.
Regarding Arshid Dar, he said the deceased was responsible for the murder of a civilian Shabir Ahmed Mir at Naru Pulwama on March 20.
He was also responsible for the killing of Mohammed Ashraf Ganai at Samboora Pampore, he added.
ASP Pulwama further said that three Jawans of 53 RR and two Jawans of 55 RR were also injured in the encounter out of whom, one Jawan of 53-RR succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Three more militants were gunned down by Pulwama police and the army at Chak Matrigam in Shopian.
