DRDO develops environment-friendly fire-fighting technology

A fire fighting technology that does not have any adverse effect on environment has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

New Delhi, May 22 : A fire fighting technology that does not have any adverse effect on environment has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The new technology named "Hepta-flouro Propane" is dry chemical powder based. And, it has been developed by the Centre for Fire, Explosives and Environment Safety (CFEES), a DRDO laboratory here.

It is aimed at replacing the use of Halon as fire extinguisher conforming to the Montreal Protocol on ozone depleting substances that require gradual phasing out of Chloro-Fluro-Carbon (CFC) and Halons.

Halon 1211 and Halon 1301 are special-purpose fire extinguishing agents that were banned by the Montreal Protocol.

Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety, DRDO took up a project on development of dry chemical powder as fire extinguishant to replace Halons in non-critical area of applications and has successfully a Mono Amonium Phosphat based muli-purpose dry chemical powder fire extinguishant for A, B and C categories of fire. It is also useful for electrical installation fire.

The developed ABC powder conforms to both International (ISO-7202) and National (IS-4308 and 14609) standard/specifications, the DRDO release stated.

Hepta-flouro Propane for Halon Replacement is one among the six technologies that have been transferred from this laboratory to the industries.

The other five being Map based Extinguishant Powder for ABC class of Fires, Advanced Oxidation Process for disposal of toxic heavy-metal wastes, Cement-based Solid matrix for disposal of toxic heavy-metal wastes, Laser-based Intelligent Fire Sensor and the Activated Carbon Spheroids for NBC applications.
