Aizwal, May 21 : Youngsters in Mumbai and Delhi are not the only ones who have a ball during annual beauty contests. Apparently, Mizo boys and girls also enjoy watching their friends walking down the ramp as models. Such was the case during the first-ever Super Model Contest 2007 held here recently.

About 150 models from different parts of Mizoram participated in the month-long fashion extravaganza.

It was a welcome change for the youngsters to see a beauty contest in their own State, rather than traveling miles, to Delhi and Mumbai, to see such events.

"This is the first time in Mizoram that a super model contest was organized. I was happy, and I thought I would win," said Elizabeth, one of the contestants.

"I am going to help the poor people," said Miriam Zothanpui another contestant.

Several fashion designers from the north-east have earned a reputation in the field, but the lack of basic infrastructure has motivated most of them move out to other States.

"We have a lot of pretty girls. We have great potential. So, we want to open up an opportunity for them so that they can earn money as cover girls (for magazines). There are lots of fashion shows that we have done before. We have been doing this for over ten years now and among these contestants we have a lot of models," said Ruth L Hrangchal, one of the organizers of the Super Model Contest 2007.

"The Mizoram Super Model Contest, I think, is a very good opportunity for Mizo girls to expose themselves to other parts of the world. The show is very well organized. This will give our girls a very good career opportunity," said C. Lalthangpuii, a member of the audience, watching the show.

The north east has rarely been a fashion fraternity hotspot, but north-east models, with their distinctive looks, have vowed people over the years. They have been highly appreciated both in the country and abroad, thus creating avenues for others wanting to take up modeling as a career.

The finals were held at the Vanapa Hall, where 30 models vied for the title.

Ninteen-year-old Irene, a standard twelve school student, won the competition.
