Berhampore court acquits Congress MP Adhir Ranjan of murder charges

Berhampore (West Bengal), May 21: A city court here today acquitted Congress MP from Berhampore, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, in connection with the murder of a hotelier and his son two years ago.

Chowdhury, his wife Arpita and 13 other accused were acquitted.

Additional District Judge Hem Chandra said as there were no reasonable grounds for conviction, the accused are acquitted.

All the accused were facing the charges of killing Hanif Sheikh and Laltu Sheikh on July 24, 2005.

Chowdhury was picked up from Delhi on Novemeber 19, and non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued against him. He was later produced before Murshidabad court.

Before getting bail from the Calcutta High Court, he was in jail for almost a month and a half.

Chowdhury and his followers were present in the court when the judgement was announced.
