The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has expressed confidence that its yet to be named candidate would get elected as the next President of the country.

New Delhi, May 16 : The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has expressed confidence that its yet to be named candidate would get elected as the next President of the country.

NDA leaders who met at the residence of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Tuesday evening, decided to authorise the senior leader to monitor the progress on the issue.

"All the members were of the opinion that chances of NDA candidate winning the presidential election is very bright and A B Vajpayee is authorised to monitor the whole thing and convene another meeting to announce the name," said V K Malhotra, BJP spokesman.

BJP has been mulling over the name of Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as a possible candidate.

The term of incumbent President A.P.J Abdul Kalam ends on July 24. But so far, the outgoing President has not shown direct willingness for a second term.

Kalam was elected as the President during the NDA regime.

The President is elected by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both Houses of the Parliament and the State Legislative Assemblies.

Voting takes place by secret ballot and uses the Single Transferable Vote method of proportional representation.
