Mayawatis googly: Give reservation to poor upper caste people

Within minutes of taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, who secured a majority in the State Assembly by building a rainbow coalition of Dalits, upper caste, OBCs and Muslims, today demanded reservation for poor section of people belonging to upper caste and religious minority in government jobs.

Lucknow, May 13 : Within minutes of taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, who secured a majority in the State Assembly by building a rainbow coalition of Dalits, upper caste, OBCs and Muslims, today demanded reservation for poor section of people belonging to upper caste and religious minority in government jobs.

"We will ask the Centre to legislate a new law that would provide reservation to the poor people among the upper caste and religious minority in government jobs," Mayawati said today here in her press conference after taking oath as the State's 32nd Chief Minister.

"If the Centre fails to bring such enactment then my government will pass a new law in the State for providing reservation to the poor people among the upper castes and religious minority," she added. ayawati, who carefully crafted a support base that included the Jatav Dalits and the upper caste Brahmins and traders along with Muslims and some section of Other Backward Class (OBC), got a rich dividend as her party won 206 Assembly seats, thereby forming the new government in the State on its own.

The single party government in the State is coming after a gap of 14 years, when the coalition parties ruled the State.

Mayawati, who had got the Dalits' support in the last decade by lambasting the upper caste sections took an unprecedented step of trying to rope in the same upper caste people in her party's fold by organising 'Brahmin conferences' during last two years.

She also gave a huge number of party tickets to Brahmin candidates to contest the Assembly elections, apart from Muslims, and succeeded in bringing the socially deprived Dalits together with their historical 'tormentors' upper castes.

However, today Mayawati also tried to make a fine balance by not forgetting her main Dalit supporters and said that all the vacant seats in the government jobs that are reserved for Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes will be filled as soon as possible.
