Mayawati acts tough, suspends 2 IAS officers

Within hours after taking oath as 32nd Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, BSP supremo Mayawati today suspended two senior IAS officers for failing to maintain the Ambedkar Park, a multi-crore park in Lucknow dedicated to Dalit icon B R Ambedkar.

Lucknow, May 13 : Within hours after taking oath as 32nd Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, BSP supremo Mayawati today suspended two senior IAS officers for failing to maintain the Ambedkar Park, a multi-crore park in Lucknow dedicated to Dalit icon B R Ambedkar.

The two senior officers suspended are Principal Secretary of Public Works Department, S K Aggrawal and Vice President of Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), B. B. Singh.

Both are considered close to the outgoing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

She has also stopped all the post retirement benefits to retired officer R S Yadav for dereliction of duty by not cleaning the park, which was built by Mayawati when she was in power in 2001-02.

This decision was announced just after she was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the State.

"I had visited the park and had noticed that it was not maintained nicely. I consider these officers responsible for this and so I am suspending them," Mayawati said.

During a press conference that she had held earlier in the day, Mayawati said that she would be acting tough on those irresponsible and corrupt officers and would not punish them by merely transferring them.

"I would rather suspend them and launch probe against them," she had said during the press conference.

Mayawati's swift and tough action has already sent the official community in tizzy and administrative circles are witnessing a hustle and bustle of activity.

Several previously halted projects are being restarted to please the new political dispensation.

An unusual enthusiasm to present a good report card is evident in the fresh vigour shown towards various projects, especially the ones inaugurated by Mayawati earlier.

"We are cleaning it so that tomorrow nobody says that the work is not done properly or is done wrong. Munshi Ji keeps telling us as what to do," said a labourer working round the clock at the Ambedkar Park in Lucknow.

Officials seem to be in a hurry to finish up the work.

"From morning till evening we are working here. We whitewash, paint and even the stonework is also happening simultaneously. Work on the lawn had been going on since the beginning," said another worker.
