Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has claimed that the number of farmers suicides in the States Vidarbha region has gone down sharply over the past year.

New Delhi, May 13 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has claimed that the number of farmers' suicides in the State's Vidarbha region has gone down sharply over the past year.

Deshmukh, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said the number of farmers suicides, which was 61 in March 2006, is 16 for the same month this year.

As many as 575 farmers had committed suicide due to agrarian crisis in the six worst-affected Vidarbha Districts in 2006.

While, the first three months of 2006 saw 168 farmers' deaths, this year 40 farmers - Nine in January, 15 in February and 16 in March - have committed suicide in Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal districts of Vidarbha.

The Prime Minister had announced a special relief package of Rs 3,750 crore for the farmers of Vidarbha in distress.

"The Prime Minister's relief package has helped a lot in providing succour to farmers in Vidarbha," Deshmukh said.
