Tamil Nadu will construct a modern and spacious complex for its Legislative Assembly at a new location soon.
Chennai, May 12 : Tamil Nadu will construct a modern and spacious complex for its Legislative Assembly at a new location soon.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi made the announcement in the Assembly, which is presently housed at the Fort St George built by Robert Clive over three centuries ago.
The new complex would be modern and more spacious than the existing one, he said.
He also said that its foundation stone would be laid very soon with the probable date of completion before the expiry of the current Assembly's term in May, 2011.
He, however, did not mention the location for the proposed complex.
The structure would come up without demolishing any educational institutions or taking away university land, he said.
The previous AIADMK Government called off its plan to construct a new secretariat-cum assembly complex in the Queen Mary's Women's College complex site on the Marina beach road, following resistance by the students of the century-old institution.
Then, former Chief Minister J Jayalalithha had laid the foundation for the new complex at the Anna University Complex in the city's Kotturpuram area.
But, the project did not take off due to non environmental clearance by the Centre.
