Employee retention and motivation is a tightrope walk for HR managers in today's job swarmed market.

Rai Foundation organized the conference "Retention & Motivational Strategies for Corporates in Today's Global & Competitive Era." Ms. Nymph Kaul, Executive Director Rai Foundation, said in her welcome note, "there is a pressing need of inclusive growth which involves professionals, industry and the country at large." She emphasized on the importance of industry-academia ties for the growth. Human Resource (HR) managers from top-notch companies attended the conference. Ms. Malvieka Joshi, Director HR, Ciena Telecom, Mr Naveen Kumar, Director HR, Le Meridien, Ms Mona Dutta, Manager, HR & Communication, HCL, Mr Prashant Choubey, Add.Manager, HR, Reliance Energy, Mr Sandeep Tyagi, GM HR, Haier India, AGM, HR, Sterling Tools along with others did brain storming to find out what retains and motivates employees.

Ms. Malvieka Joshi said that war of talent was on because of the demand and supply gap. She explained that for retention of employees, companies were rolling out innovative benefit schemes. Ms. Joshi added that companies had felt the need of helping employees in striking a fine balance between spouse and mouse. Ms. Mona Dutta, Manager HR & Communication HCL said, "HCL has seen a meteoric rise in last two years in terms of head count." She further said that to manage more than forty thousand employees spread across the globe was an uphill task. Ms Datta made a presentation on how technology is helping in managing such a large work force.

Mr. Naveen Kumar of Le Meridien explored the problems of attrition in different industries. Mr. Kumar also explained the importance of clarity of aim in professional life. Mr. Prashant Choubey, Add. Manager HR, Reliance Energy said, "a good human being can become a HR manager." He further said, "attrition is not always a problem sometimes it's a requirement to weed out problem employees. Mr. Sandeep Tyagi, GM HR, Haier India said, "low attrition doesn't mean everything is fine with an organization." He further explained that as industry was operating on very thin profits because of the tough competition; every employee needed to perform to the best of his/her capacity.

After the enlightening round of discussion, Ms. Kakul Rizvi, Dean College of Media & Communication (Rai Foundation Colleges) thanked the guests for sharing their experiences in the industry. Expressing deep sense of pleasure, Ms. Rizvi said, "All such discussion give students insights of real industry functioning and challenges." She also emphasized on the need of industry-academia interactions and partnership.
