TRS legislator accused of human trafficking surrenders(Lead: Human Trafficking)

Rebel Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MLA S Bapu Rao, accused to be involved in the human trafficking case, today surrendered before police at the Central Crime Station in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad, May 10 : Rebel Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MLA S Bapu Rao, accused to be involved in the human trafficking case, today surrendered before police at the Central Crime Station in Hyderabad.

Police have been in the look out for Babu Rao after his name cropped up in the case, but he had been absconding since then.

Rao, who is alleged to have links with travel agencies, had met the alleged kingpin of the racket, Rashid.

Rashid is believed to be a broker for politicians, and is alleged to have contacts with many MPs.

Police said Rashid helped the legislators smuggle people out of the country on their official passports.

"In legal provisions arrest is not mandatory, if a person is cooperating and giving the evidence we require. If prepared to give all the evidence, then it is not required ... But I am not saying in this case, what we will do because it will all depend on the result of investigation," said Balwinder Singh, Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad, after Babu Rao surrendered before the police.

Babu Rao's counsel, however, denied his involvement in the racket saying he was falsely implicated in it.

"Babu Rao has nothing to do with the passport scam. He has applied for his family's passport but where this has been done. He is not aware of anything about changing of photos or applications or whatever. He was falsely implicated," said Jitendra Reddy, Babu Rao's counsel.

Another rebel, TRS legislator Kasipeta Lingaiah, is already in judicial custody in connection with a fake passport racket case. Rashid had alleged that he paid an undisclosed amount to Lingaiah.

According to some reports, Rashid had also named - Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP and former Union Minister Narender Alle, former TDP State Minister Kistappa, former TDP MP Sugana Kumari and former TDP Minister K Ramakanth of being involved in the case.
