Two female rhinos from the US, a new attraction at Patna Zoo

The Patna Zoo received two female rhinos - a mother and its calf - from the United States, on Thursday, much to the jubilation of visitors and zoo officials.

Patna, May 10 : The Patna Zoo received two female rhinos - a mother and its calf - from the United States, on Thursday, much to the jubilation of visitors and zoo officials.

Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Park officials said the delivery of the four-year-old and four-month-old rhinos from the San Diego Wild Animal Park would give a boost to breeding efforts at the zoo.

India has sent one male rhino to the US in exchange.

"This is a very important exchange, because it gives us an opportunity to bring new genes to Indian zoos and get new genes back to the North American rhino population. So, it's a very important transaction for both India and the US," said Randy G.Rieches, the curator of the San Diego Animal Park.

The Patna Zoo now has four female and six male rhinos.

Rakesh Kumar, the Director of the Zoo, said the exchange would boost the dwindling female rhino population in India.

"In the whole country, the ratio of male and female rhinos is skewed.e have 35 rhinos, out of which 25 are male. So, we do not need any males," he said.

The Great Indian Rhinoceros has a single horn, usually about 53 centimetres long and has skin with loose folds, which makes it appear armoured.

There are approximately 2,400 Indian Rhinos, mostly in northern India and southern Nepal.

It is regarded as being among the rarest of mammals in the world today.

They are the largest land mammals after the elephant and weigh between 1,800 kilograms to 3,600 kilograms.
