Fake encounter: Gujarat CID team in Hyderabad

A two-member Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID) team headed by Inspector General of Police Geeta Johri arrived here on Thursday to investigate the role of Andhra Pradesh police in the Sohrabbudin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Hyderabad, May 10 : A two-member Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID) team headed by Inspector General of Police Geeta Johri arrived here on Thursday to investigate the role of Andhra Pradesh police in the Sohrabbudin Sheikh fake encounter case.

The investigating team said they would clarify issues related to the case after investigation.

"We have just come to clarify the various issues. We have come to investigate," said Johri.

Johri is likely to visit the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Mess in Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad tomorrow.

Gujarat cadre IPS officer, E Radhakrishnayya, who was posted at CRPF Hyderabad, had reportedly met suspended Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Pandian, who is under arrest in connection with the case, at the mess when Sheikh was killed in November 2005.

The Andhra Pradesh police are, however, denying any involvement in the case.

The arrested policemen ATS inspector N H Dabhi and two constables Ajay Parmar and Santram Sharma were also taken to Andhra Pradesh.

They were part of the ATS team that went to Hyderabad under Pandian to track and bring Sheikh to Gujarat.

Three IPS officers arrested in the case are - DIG (Border Range) DG Vanzara, Pandian and Alwar Superintendent MN Dinesh Kumar.

Vanzara and Pandian were part of the team that carried out the fake encounter of Sheikh. They have also been accused of killing Sheikh's wife Kausar Bi.

The Gujarat Police, on Supreme Court's prodding, arrested three senior police officers for killing Sheikh.

Sheikh was reportedly gunned down on November 26, 2005 after being branded a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant by the Gujarat Police, allegedly trying to hatch a conspiracy to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The probe revelation has raised a debate across the country over staged encounters by security forces at the behest of political bosses.
