Backward classes commission chief conferred status of Union Cabinet Minister

Former judge of the Supreme Court Justice S. Ratnavel Pandian, who took over as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) on August 14, 2006 has been conferred the status of the Union Cabinet Minister in the Table of Precedence for the duration of the term of his office.

New Delhi, May 10 : Former judge of the Supreme Court Justice S. Ratnavel Pandian, who took over as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) on August 14, 2006 has been conferred the status of the Union Cabinet Minister in the Table of Precedence for the duration of the term of his office.

Justice Pandian was born on March 13, 1929 at Thiruppudaimarudhur village in Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, and had his schooling from Theerthapathi High School, Ambasamudram. He was graduated from Saint Xavier's College at Palayamkottai and thereafter obtained his law degree at Madras Law College in 1954.

After practicing as an advocate for nearly 17 years in the Madras High Court, he was elevated as Judge of the High Court in February, 1974. Justice Pandian was the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court from January 18, 1988 to January 29, 1988 and from March 13, 1988 to December 13, 1988.

On December 14, 1988, he was sworn in as Judge of the Supreme Court. During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Pandian gave a number of landmark judgements, including the judgement in the famous Indira Sawhney case. Justice Pandian retired from the Supreme Court on March 12, 1994.

After retirement from the Supreme Court, Justice Pandian headed from 1994 to 1997 the Fifth Central Pay Commission, which gave its final report in April 1997.
