Castrol Sponsors Unique Safe Driving Event for Truckers

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Castrol India Limited, concluded the national finals of the India leg of the International Driving championship - a global multi-pronged initiative by the BP Group, aimed at promoting and enhancing safe driving practices amongst employees, contractors and other stakeholders of the company. The championship was flagged off by Mr. Adnan Ahmad, Director - Supply Chain, Castrol India Ltd. at the Hakone go-carting track at Powai.

Around 32 contestants in the trucking segment and 14 contestants from the passenger car segment participated in the final event after coming through the qualifying rounds held across the country. The competition includes several tests of skill and control including serpentine, parking into an alley, parallel parking, speed control etc. In the trucking segment, Gopi Ram Jat (Delhi) and Lal Bahadur Tiwari (Chennai) secured the first and second position respectively and in the passenger car segment Amlaan Mukherjee (Gurgaon) and Amit Jha (Goa) secured the first and second position respectively. The winners will now participate in the regional finals to be held in May 2007 at Dubai. The global finals will be held in October 2007 in Las Vegas, U.S.A.

Sharing the motivation behind this initiative in India, Mr. Adnan Ahmad, Director Supply Chain, said "Castrol India works closely with its transporters to ensure that all of them adhere to the highest road safety standards which are globally set within the BP world. In a way, we are setting the road safety standards for the trucking community in India and towards that, we have undertaken several path breaking initiatives in propagating road safety. The International Driving Championship is part of a global initiative undertaken by BP to recognize and acknowledge the driver's skill and understanding of road safety. Given the road and vehicle conditions in India, truckers find it even more difficult to drive in India and we are doing our best to provide them with support - both in terms of infrastructure and equipment and providing softer skills like defensive training and advanced skill building".

Besides the international driving championship, Castrol has undertaken several key initiatives in promoting road safety amongst its own staff, truck contractors and their drivers and the public at large. During 2006, the company has trained over 3000 contractor drivers in defensive driving whereas over 1000 drivers have undergone advance driving training. Every staff member who drives on company business is also trained in defensive driving and cannot get behind a wheel without a certification. Extending this initiative, the company has also trained 35 drivers who operate cool cabs in Mumbai.
