Congress nominates Sonia to select Presidential nominee

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) today nominated party president Sonia Gandhi to select partys candidate for the next Presidential and Vice Presidential polls.

New Delhi, June 4 : The Congress Working Committee (CWC) today nominated party president Sonia Gandhi to select party's candidate for the next Presidential and Vice Presidential polls.

The meeting that was held in the background of the weeklong violent protests by the Gujjar community demanding Scheduled Tribe status also took stock of the situation and criticised the BJP led Rajasthan government for failing to tackle the situation.

Regarding the next Presidential poll, the dates for which is yet to be announced, Sonia Gandhi has been asked to discuss to the UPA constituents and the Left leaders for bringing a consensus on the name of the party's nominee.

Many names are presently doing rounds from Congress for the country's top constitutional post and the list of probables include- Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, ICCR chairman Dr. Karan Singh, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and former Chief Minister of Uttrakhand N D Tiwari.

The name of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who is a Left leader, is also doing the rounds.

Though Pranab Mukherjee's name has already fetched Left leaders' approval, Prime Minister Singh has publicly denied discussion of any names.

Today's CWC meeting also discussed party's recent debacle in the Uttar Pradesh elections that had witnessed Congress MP from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, actively campaigning for the party.

However, Sonia and her son Rahul have already blamed poor organisational structure of the party in the State for the debacle where Congress managed to secure over 20 seats down from its earlier tally of 25 seats.
