Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh), June 26 : One inmate was killed and several injured, including two policemen, in a prison clash in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur District on Monday.
Clashes erupted when jail authorities were conducting a search for illegal mobile phones.The computer room, kitchen and store-room were set afire by the prisoners during the three hour long melee.
Police opened fire in the air to bring the situation under control.
The use of mobile phones is banned in Indian prisons, but imprisoned ganglords and mafia dons directing extortion and kidnapping, rackets, besides masterminding, rival gang killings and rigging of polls with the help of cell phones is not unheard of.
Inmates often use their political clout to bribe prison guards and earn privileges and amenities behind bars.
