Amritsar, which has been known for its Dhaba food, is now witnessing the gradual growth of tiffin culture.

Amritsar, June 26 : Amritsar, which has been known for its Dhaba food, is now witnessing the gradual growth of 'tiffin culture'.
"Tiffin culture", a relatively novel concept for Amritsar, is becoming popular with people who do not have to time to visit Dhabas for their lunch. Home made food, packed in neat containers, is sent to various workplaces at reasonable cost.
The 'tiffin culture' has been introduced by Sandeep, a native of Amristar. Cooking delicacies at home was his hobby.
It occurred to him that he could send food to shopkeepers and office-goers for whom time is money. They would prefer to eat homemade food at their workplace at affordable prices.
Sandeep, helped by his wife and mother, started sending pure vegetarian food, packed in containers, for rupees 20 for one meal. For those who gave monthly orders, it cost rupees 450 (about ten dollars) for a month.
The same quantity of food would cost thrice the price at a restaurant.
The Tiffin service has a fixed menu for his customers from Monday to Saturday with a variety of cereals to seasoned vegetables, chapattis, rice, curd along with salad and pickles.
He says: "I along with my wife select fresh vegetable every day in the evening, my mother help chop the vegetables."
Sandeep's wife, Shalini says: "Actually the idea of supplying the home made food is of my husband as he himself has been a good cook and an energetic person."From just two clients barely a few months ago, Sandeep's venture today has over 100 clients.
Rupesh Sharma, a daily customer of Sandeep's homemade food said that the food is not only 'yummy' but also hygienically prepared and packed. Moreover, the price is reasonable.The Amritsar Dhabas are now on notice. They know that Sandeep has plans to involve his brother's family in the business.
