Miffed BJP accuses Shiv Sena of being hand in glove with Congress

A day after the Shiv Sena announced its support for UPA-Left Presidential nominee Pratibha Patil, an angry BJP hit out at its oldest ally, charging it with being hand in glove with the Congress.

New Delhi/Mumbai, June 26 : A day after the Shiv Sena announced its support for UPA-Left Presidential nominee Pratibha Patil, an angry BJP hit out at its oldest ally, charging it with being hand in glove with the Congress.

While the Shiv Sena had said that its decision to support Patil instead of NDA's 'independent candidate' Bhairon Singh Shekhawat would not affect its ties with the BJP, the latter today said that the Sena has 'betrayed' them.

"This is a betrayal," said BJP General Secretary Gopinath Munde, adding, "The Shiv Sena is into a deal with the Congress."

Munde alleged that in exchange of support to Patil, Sena has got an assurance from the Congress that Narayan Rane would not be appointed as the Chief Minister ever.

Once a Sena loyalist, Rane had defected from the party to join the Congress.

Munde also criticized Sena's Marathi-pride argument behind its decision to support Patil and said that many Rajya Sabha members from Sena are non-Maharashtrians.

On Monday, Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, which has always trumpeted the cause of Maratha and Marathi speaking people, said, "We will be proud to see a Marathi woman as President."

Sena's move is a big blow to Shekhawat's candidature since Sena commands 21,590 votes in the Presidential Electoral College-- the third biggest party in terms of votes in the NDA, trailing behind BJP and Janata Dal (United).

The NDA, which commands 3,53,973 Presidential votes is already far behind UPA, whose vote will now swell close to 6 lakhs in the total 11 lakhs votes of the Presidential Electoral College.

Sena's decision to support Patil's candidature came after much deliberation, as the party was reportedly divided over supporting a Marathi, who could become India's first women President, or still cling to its old ally BJP.
