Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The Hutch India Rugby Team along with their new coach made a resounding start to a 'New era' by thumping the higher-ranked Guam 47-0 at the Bombay Gymkhana in the Asian Rugby Tournament 2007. Guam is ranked 82 to India's 87.

Being wary of the ability of the Guam big frontmen, India started the game with some solid defensive work and though Guam applied pressure they could make no headway. The patience of the hosts paid dividends as winger and Maharashtra Police player Ganesh Sawant hit the skates to score the first try. With Emil Vartazarian converting India sat on a 7-0 lead with seven minutes gone. The play thereafter shifted totally into the Guam half as the visitors began to find the going tough.
Captain Nasser Hussain was the next to find a gap in the Guam defense and sprint away from the chase for the second try.

Vartazarian converted once more and it wasn't long before Mufaddal Indorewalla found some room to score his first try of the game. Emil converted once more from a difficult angle and then scored with a drop goal just before halftime to give India a 24-0 lead.

A heavy downpour slowed the game down marginally, but India continued to have the upper hand and Vartazarian's faultless kicking saw him kick two penalties in a row to add a further six points to the score. It was next the turn of Francis Brown to be set up by the big men. Brown battled off some stiff defence to slide the ball over the line and Vartazarian was on hand once again to convert taking the score to 37-0.

It was deep into the second half when Guam came close to scoring but a tough and unrelenting Indian defence turned the ball over in their favour. That was as good as it got for the visitors as they were quickly pushed back into their half. An important pass from captain, Nasser Hussain, set Bikash Jena to score his first try of the game and Vartazarian was on target again with his kick to take the score to 44-0. In the dying moments of the game he scored again from a penalty to give India a 47-0 win.

Hutch India coach, David Wiggins was reasonably happy with his team saying, "We dominated the game completely. A good start sure negated the pressure from the Guam front men. Everyone did what they had to, playing a different style from what they are used to." Looking to the next game against the Philippines in Manila, Wiggins added, "If we play like we did today we will be very difficult to beat. We don't know what they play like but if we play the same way we will win."

Result: India 47 (Ganesh Sawant 1 Try, Emil Vartazarian 5 conversions, 3 Penalties & 1 drop goal, Nasser Hussain 1 Try, Mufaddal Indorewalla 1 Try, Francis Brown 1 Try, Bikash Jena 1 Try).
