Shekhawat likely to file nomination on Monday

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is likely to file his nomination papers for the July 19 presidential election on Monday, the day coinciding with the 32nd anniversary of the 18-month long state of emergency imposed in 1975.

New Delhi, June 24 : Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is likely to file his nomination papers for the July 19 presidential election on Monday, the day coinciding with the 32nd anniversary of the 18-month long state of emergency imposed in 1975.

Shekhawat, who is contesting as an independent candidate, has the backing of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The race for selecting India's 12th President has already gained momentum with UPA candidate Pratibha Patil filing her nomination papers on Saturday. With incumbent APJ Abdul Kalam withdrawing from the race to the Raisina Hill, the former Rajasthan Governor is emerging as a front-runner for the President.

The UPA-Left and the Bahujan Samaj Party have around 5,70,265 votes. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has around 3,54,689 votes, while the UNPA has 1,06,281 votes.

Kalam, who had earlier expressed his willingness for second tenure if there was certainty of his victory, yesterday said that "enough was enough".

"In five years time in Rashtrapati Bhavan, we have all worked for transforming it into a people's bhavan. Rashtrapati Bhavan has become a people's bhavan today. I believe it should be an example for the nation. It should not get degenerated. That is why I said enough is enough," Kalam said during an interaction with a news agency.

The filing of nomination papers will continue till June 30. The scrutiny will take place on July 2 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is July 4.

The counting of votes will take place on July 21, three days before the term of office of the incumbent President ends on July 24.

The President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and of the Legislative Assemblies of the States (including National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry).

As per the Presidential Elections Rules of 1974, a prospective Presidential candidate should get his nomination paper subscribed by at least 50 electors as proposers and at least 50 electors as seconders.
