India has been identified by the International Rugby Board (IRB) as one of the countries with tremendous potential for the growth of Rugby, and providing commitment to the IRB's vision with their support is KAPPA, the official apparel partner of Indian Rugby, Hutch, the official sponsor of Indian Rugby and Kingfisher, the Official Refresher to Indian Rugby.
This was announced by Pramod Khanna, the President of the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) at a press conference to launch the 2007 season of the Hutch Indian Rugby Team.
The official jersey of the Hutch Indian Rugby Team, designed and manufactured by KAPPA, was unveiled at the press conference and showcased by Model Gauhar Khan, along with the Hutch Indian Rugby Team.
The IRFU's latest initiative, the hiring of English coach David Wiggins was also announced by Pramod Khanna. Wiggens, who has played and coached rugby at the highest level is expected to instill superior skills and professionalism into the Hutch Indian Rugby Team as the players brace themselves for stiffer challenges ahead.
"Kappa and Rugby share a very strong synergy as both stand for passion and dynamism in their true sense. Having sponsored the Italian National Rugby team for the past 5 years, Kappa has enjoyed a very meaningful association with the sport. In line with our global strategy, we are delighted to partner IRFU to nurture this promising sport in India," stated Fazle A. Naqvi, Executive Director, LMG Brands.
Kappa brings to the table a rich history of international sporting events. Internationally, Kappa sponsors a host of national football and golf teams, several top level club sides as well as national and club level teams in various other sporting disciplines such as rugby, cycling, yachting and motor sports.
A day before the international fixture, on June 22, the city's glitterati will come together in an unprecedented show of strength and support, participating in a Celebrity Match at 3.30 p.m. to facilitate increased awareness and raise the profile of the game.
Admitted to the IRB in 2001, the Indian Rugby Team is currently ranked 87th in the world having tasted first international victory in 2004, beating Pakistan 56-3 in the Tier-III competition of the Asian Biennial Tournament.
After the international against Guam, the Hutch Indian Rugby Team departs for Manila on June 27th to play Philippines on July 1st. Further international assignments include a trip to Kandy, Sri Lanka to play the Asian seven-a-side tournament on September 8 & 9 and another journey to Sri Lanka in November to play in the Asian Rugby Football Union Tournament.
Bombay Gymkhana will play host to the Hutch All-India & South Asia Rugby Tournament from September 22 to 29, while other National assignments include two seven-a-side tournaments, one for clubs and another for states. The inter-state tournament will also be the selection trials to pick the teams that will play in the National Games.
A busy season awaits the Hutch Indian Rugby Team and no efforts are being spared by the IRFU to ensure that a quality support structure is in place. Promoting the game at the grass root level, among schools, colleges and clubs is another serious IRFU initiative.
