Educational institutions should work as centres of social service in order to mitigate the human sufferings, Dr. Jai Rup Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University said here today.

By Ravinder Singh RobinAmritsar, June 19 : Educational institutions should work as centres of social service in order to mitigate the human sufferings, Dr. Jai Rup Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University said here today.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteers of various institutions could do this work efficiently, he added."The NSS has been a pioneer in nation building. It also contributes commendably to make the general masses aware about the various social evils," Singh said.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the Central and State Governments should release maximum grants for the NSS activities so that its volunteers can participate in awareness movements against various social evils, cleanliness, tree plantation, building check dams.

S.K. Sahni, Deputy NSS Programme Advisor, Chandigarh assured the members that the grants would be released in time for running the NSS activities smoothly.
