New Delhi, June19 : Hundreds of Shi'ite Muslims took to the streets here on Tuesday to protest against the bombing at a highly revered shrine of Shia Imams in Iraq's Samarra city.
The protestors raised anti-US and anti-Israeli slogans, denouncing the bombing on the shrine complex housing the tombs of Imam al Hadi and Imam Hasan al-Askari in Samarra on June 13.
Led by Shia Muslim leader Syed Kalbe Jawwad, they raised slogans like 'Shia and Sunnis were brothers' and 'Down with America'. They also burned an effigy of US President George Bush.
"We want to convey the message that the attacks on holy shrines are unacceptable to all Muslims whether Shia, Sunni, Barelvi or Hanafi. We believe no human being can tolerate attacks on sacred places of any religion," said Jawwad.
They said the US had launched a war against the Muslim world, and decried its policy in West Asia.
"We had initially invited the leaders and not the public. If Muslims from across the country comes here, the roads of New Delhi will not be able to accommodate them. We just want America to stop its anti-Muslim activities at once," added Jawwad.
