New Delhi, June 19 : China has decided to increase the payload capacity of its Long March series of carrier rockets from 9.5 tons to 25 tons.
China's Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation officials said Beijing was planning for a new generation of carrier rockets in order to advance its lunar exploration programmes.
Huang Chunping, a leading Chinese aerospace expert said, the new generation of carrier rockets would have a large enough payload capacity to launch a space station.
"The development will greatly increase China's ability of peaceful uses of outer space," Xinhua News Agency quoted an official as saying.
According to China Daily, Beijing had on June 1, launched the "SinoSat-3", a communications satellite for radio and television broadcasting, from a Long March-3A carrier rocket, marking the 100th flight of the Long March series.
