NDA to announce its candidate for Presidents election

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will meet here today to announce its candidate for the post of the President.

New Delhi, June 18 : The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will meet here today to announce its candidate for the post of the President.

The BJP-led NDA is expected to announce the candidature of Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who may contest as an Independent in the presidential election.

The formal announcement is likely to be made by former prime minister A B Vajpayee after a meeting of the opposition alliance at his residence.

Earlier, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had said that Pratibha Patil is UPA's choice under compulsion and she is not a natural choice.

"No consensus is possible on UPA's presidential candidate, because the very basis of nomination for the Presidential election is not correct. For the Congress, loyalty to the Gandhi family has been the main condition for the nomination while for the Left, the criteria has been the survival of the UPA," Sushma said.

The term of incumbent President A.P.J Abdul Kalam ends on July 24.

Kalam was elected president during the regime of former NDA government headed by Vajpayee.
