The Union Petroleum Secretary M S Srinivasan today said that the Centre would soon introduce Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuels for automobiles in Jammu and Kashmir.
Srinagar, June 18 : The Union Petroleum Secretary M S Srinivasan today said that the Centre would soon introduce Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuels for automobiles in Jammu and Kashmir.
In an attempt to maintain the delicate ecological balance in the hilly State, Srinivasan told reporters that auto LPG would be introduced in a big way and it would be an intermediate arrangement till a CNG pipeline is extended to the State.
Srinivasan was speaking on the sidelines of a regional meeting of three Northern hill States of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand chaired by Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora.
Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had asked the State Government and the Centre to establish a CNG pipeline network in the State.
Deora assured the three State Governments that their needs and requirements with respect to the energy sector shall be given due priority to ensure that their development was not impaired.
The public sector oil marketing companies viz. IOC, BPCL have plans to set up 25 more retail outlets (ROs) and three more LPG distributorships in Himachal Pradesh, 49 ROs and 24 distributorships in J and K, and 22 ROs and 3 distributorships in Uttarakhand, an official release stated.
The LPG cover in the three States of J and K, Uttaranchal, and in Himachal Pradesh is 85 percent, 90 percent and 97 percent of the total population respectively, which is more than double the national average of 45 percent.
Besides this, it is likely that ethanol blended petrol would be introduced in Himachal Pradesh from the first week of July.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has recently taken the initiative of introducing ethanol blended petrol, which is not only environmentally friendly but is also beneficial to the farmers all across the country.
