Bikaner folk artists campaign for Taj Mahals inclusion in new wonders list

Folk artists in Bikaner have joined the campaign for the inclusion of the Taj Mahal in the new Seven Wonders of the World list.

Bikaner, June 18 : Folk artists in Bikaner have joined the campaign for the inclusion of the Taj Mahal in the new Seven Wonders of the World list.

Dressed in traditional costumes, these artistes have been performing in public places urging people to vote for the Taj Mahal. Besides travelling across the state to spread message, they have also written a special song for the purpose. They say, if the Taj Mahal is not included in the new list of wonders, it will be a national shame."We have put on these colourful clothes to attract people and make them aware of the voting process. If Taj Mahal is not included in the new list of 'seven wonders of the world', we will be very sad," said Susheel Joshi, one of the artists. His colleague Mamta Goswami said: "I would just like to say that please send as many messages as you can so that the Taj Mahal can be included in the list."

The people watching these artists have been given a valuable dose of inspiration and national pride and are eager to vote for their cultural heritage."These people are working so hard. I want to contribute my input and request the people of the country to do the same," said Ganga Sharma, a resident. As voting continues for the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal has been included in the list of 21 finalists by the New 7Wonders Foundation, a privately funded organisation.

The 21 finalists in this list also include Rome's Colosseum, Jordan's ancient city of Petra, Britain's Stonehenge, and the Great Wall of China. These were shortlisted on January 1 by an experts panel chaired by the former UNESCO chief, Federico Mayor. The new seven wonders will be selected on the basis of number of votes from across the globe. The names of the winning landmarks will be announced in a live broadcast on July 7, 2007 in Portugal.

Mughal Emperor Shahjehan built the Taj Mahal as a symbol of his enduring love for his wife Mumtaz.

It stands on a marble platform in the city of Agra, 200 km south of Delhi, and is surrounded by ornamental gardens.
