Wagah, June 15 : Leaders of Sikh organisations from different parts of the world are meeting in Lahore to finalise plans for setting up the International Guru Nanak Dev University (IGNDU) at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.
The first meeting of the Sikh representatives is hosted by the Pakistan Evacuee Trust Property Board (PETPB) and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
From India the important participants include Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) Chief Avtar Singh Makkar with a four-member delegation, and Harvinder Singh Sarna, former Chief of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC).
DSGMC President Parmjit Singh Sarna said efforts would be made to strengthen relations between the Sikh and Muslim communities.
"Our efforts would be to set up the university (IGNDU) as per international standards. To strengthen the Sikh-Muslim relations, we have proposed to set up a chair in the proposed university where the research work would be done on Guru Granth Sahib and Koran simultaneously," said Sarna.
SGPC spokesperson Daljit Singh Bedi said an offer would be given to Pakistan to open a camp office of the SGPC's Sri Guru Granth Sahib Vishav University that would help in comparative studies on the religions of India and Pakistan.
American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (AGPC) Convener Dr. Pritpal Singh said that the committee was in touch with Pakistan Government to set up the IGNDU.
He said that besides financial help, the AGPC would help to bring the internationally renowned architects and professors of various departments for setting up the IGNDU.
Dr. Pritpal Singh said that the AGPC is holding meetings with various Sikh bodies for setting up the university, where students from across the world can study and carry out research work of international standards.
