Left parties to meet Karunanidhi over Presidential election

The Left parties will meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here today to take a final decision on the Presidential candidate.

New Delhi, June 13 : The Left parties will meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here today to take a final decision on the Presidential candidate.

Karunanidhi's Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) has not yet extended its support for the post of the next President.

Yesterday, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat asked for more time to decide on the name of the next Presidential candidate from the UPA-Left alliance.

Karat also said the Left Parties are not going for name-game. The above statement came when the party was asked about their opinion on Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil's candidature for the post of President.

The Left parties had earlier expressed that they wanted External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to be the next President.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has already declared that her party's 8, 000 votes will go in the favour of Congress' candidate.

With Mayawati, agreeing to support UPA's presidential candidate, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil is once again emerging as the frontrunner to become the country's First Citizen.

According to sources, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will announce the name of the UPA candidate for the post of Indian President in next twenty-four hours.
