Reliance Industries has begun orchard farming of mangoes in large area of land around its Jamnagar refinery with the aim of producing the seasonal fruit round the year.
Jamnagar, June 1 : Reliance Industries has begun orchard farming of mangoes in large area of land around its Jamnagar refinery with the aim of producing the seasonal fruit round the year.
The orchard is spread over 500 acres of land.
Even during winters last year, mangoes were produced successfully in the orchard, but the production was not enough to be marketed.
Therefore Reliance employed several horticulture experts who are now conducting research to produce sufficient quantity of mangoes during winters.
"The mangoes grow only during two or three months in a year, it should be available through out the year. By carrying out various experiments last year we managed to produce mangoes during winters, but the production wasn't enough to be marketed, said Parimal Nathwani, Group President, Corporate Affairs, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Jamnagar.
"This year we have conducted more research and experiments and therefore expecting better produce during the coming winters. So I think, we will be able to provide mangoes round the year," Nathwani added.
Nathwani further said that the mangoes produced in Reliance orchard would be available in the country through Reliance fresh outlets, its retail chain stores, and would also be exported to Europe, United States of America and Japan.
"We have planted over one lakh trees in 500 acres of land inside Jamnagar refinery. 25 to 30 varieties of mangoes have been planted here out of which main are Kesar mangoes, Ratnagiri and Dusheri etc.
"These mangoes will be marketed to Europe, America and recently Japan has also opened up its market for Indian mangoes," said Nathwani.
Around 450 tonnes of mangoes were produced in orchard this year. The researchers are also working on increasing the quality and quantity of the fruit.
Besides mangoes the company is also growing other fruits around its Jamnagar refinery to create a green belt there.
Reliance plans to go in for corporate farming at low-tax Special Economic Zones.
