Patna, July 29 : Heavy rains lashed Bihar where the flood situation has become grim with new areas getting flooded and affecting millions of people.
The State Disaster Management department has confirmed that over 17 lakh people in 11 districts have been affected by the deluge, caused by heavy rains and rising water level in Himalayan snow fed rivers. harbhanga is the worst affected district and it has been virtually cut off for the last 24 hours. Sitamarhi and Madhubani, Bhagalpur and Patna are the other districts where situation continues to remain precarious.
Army has been asked to help the State administration in the relief work, as local estimates put the figure of people affected by the flood to more than 22 lakh.
Helicopters are being used to distribute relief materials and also for evacuating people to safe areas. ourteen people have lost their lives due to the floods and close to 1.44 lakh hectares of cropped area have been submerged.
