Fans pray for minimum sentence to Sanjay Dutt

Allahabad (UP), July 29: Fans of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who has been convicted in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, offered prayers for his minimum sentence at a mausoleum here today.

Allahabad (UP), July 29: Fans of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who has been convicted in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, offered prayers for his minimum sentence at a mausoleum here today.

'Chadar' was also offered at the mausoleum to pray for Dutt, who turned 48 on Sunday.

Dutt is the son of the late Bollywood actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, and Allahabad has been the home town of Nargis.

"We are praying to God that Sanjay Dutt receives minimum punishment or no punishment at all," said Masood Ahmed, a Dutt's fan.

A special TADA court has ordered Dutt, along with three other convicted in connection with the 1993 blast case, to be present in the court on Tuesday.

Dutt has been convicted for possessing illegal weapon in the Mumbai blasts case.

He has applied for relief under the Probation of Offenders Act. According to the Act, a person convicted of any offence other than the one punishable with death or life imprisonment, can be released on probation instead of serving the sentence in prison.

Dutt has already spent nearly 15 months, as an under-trial before being released on bail in 1996.

Minimum sentence for the charges under which Dutt has been found guilty is three years.

Dutt was booked for possessing an AK-56 rifle that had come in a consignment of arms and explosives meant for use in the Mumbai serial blasts that killed 257 people.
