Handwara, July 28 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today called for exemplary punishment for culprits involved in last week's rape and murder of a minor girl at Langate, and announced a monthly financial assistance of Rs. 5000 to the family of the victim for meeting the education expenses of her siblings.

Tabinda Ghani, an 8th standard student who was raped and brutally murdered by four men on July 20 while returning home from her school.

Azad's announcement here, came after inaugurating a paediatric ward constructed by the Indian Navy in memory of children who had drowned in the Wular Lake last year.

The Chief Minister said he would consult Justice Aftab Alam, the acting Chief Justice of the State High Court, to designate a special judge for the trial of the accused on a day-to-day basis.

He also asked the police to make a water tight case against the criminals so that they received the maximum punishment available under the law for the crime they had committed.

He said no words were enough to condemn the incident.

He also announced a government job for a member of the victim's family.

Azad congratulated the district police chief and his team for solving the case in a record time of three days. He said the moment he had received the shocking news, he asked Kuldeep Khuda, the Director General of Police, and the civil administration to catch the culprits within a week and bring them to book.

Of the four accused, Azad said two were local history sheeters who had cases registered against them.

He said instead of politicising the issue, the focus should be on awarding an exemplary punishment to the criminals.
