Kanimozhi, D. Raja take oath as Rajya Sabha member

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhis daughter Kanimozhi and Communist Party of India (CPI), National Secretary D Raja took oath as members of Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

New Delhi, July 26 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi and Communist Party of India (CPI), National Secretary D Raja took oath as members of Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

After ceremony, Kanimozhi said that she would take up women's issues as well as those on which the Dravida Munnetra Kazahagam (DMK) has been fighting for.

"I will also talk about that (women's issues) in a very strong way," she said.

Kanimozhi was elected to the Rajya Sabha from her home-state Tamil Nadu.

Newspapers speculated that Kanimozhi could join the Union Cabinet as a representative of DMK to fill in the place of Dayanidhi Maran, who had to quit as Minister for Telecom and Information Technology, following an internal feud in the party.

Kanimozhi, however, said she has no plans to join the Union Cabinet at present.

"I am not keen on becoming anything else. I am sure there are a lot of senior leaders in the DMK, who would be the face of the DMK. They don't need somebody as new as me to become the face of DMK," said Kanimozhi.

Kanimozhi, 39, had shunned politics for years, but is now set to take a plunge. She holds a Masters in Business Economics and is the most educated among Karunanidhi's children. She is also a well-known Tamil poet.Raja was also elected from Tamil Nadu in the recently held elections to the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Karunanidhi were present during the ceremony.
