The Andhra Pradesh Assembly has passed a bill to provide four per cent reservation for socially and economically backward Muslims in public employment and educational institutions on Monday.
Hyderabad, July 24 : The Andhra Pradesh Assembly has passed a bill to provide four per cent reservation for socially and economically backward Muslims in public employment and educational institutions on Monday.
This will benefit 15 Muslim groups, identified by the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Commission as socially and educationally backward.
A new group will be created in the Backward Classes list for the purpose of providing reservation to Muslims with the application of creamy layer norms.
The House adopted by voice vote the Bill piloted by Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, Mukesh Goud.
While the Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (M) and the Janata Party welcomed the Bill, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) objected to it.
MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi raised objections on the original five per cent reservation being reduced to four. BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy reiterated his party's stand all along, saying it was opposed to reservations in the name of religion.
