United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-Left candidate Pratibha Patil on Saturday won the 13th presidential election, defeating National Democratic Alliance (NDA) backed Independent candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by nearly three lakh votes.

New Delhi, July 21 : United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-Left candidate Pratibha Patil on Saturday won the 13th presidential election, defeating National Democratic Alliance (NDA) backed "Independent" candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by nearly three lakh votes.

With this victory, Patil is all set to become the first woman and twelfth President of India.

Counting of votes in the 13th presidential election was held at Parliament House today.

Patil received 638,116 votes out of over one million Presidential electoral college's votes against Shekhawat's 331,306 votes.

Patil's tally was 11,000 more than was expected. Minor cross-voting in favour of Patil was recorded from states like Gujarat and Jharkhand.

A total of 682 out of 770 Members of Parliament (MPs) exercised their franchise. As many as 3,755 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) out of 4,170 voted, with seven states recording 100 per cent polling.

Patil is scheduled to take oath on July 25.
