Maharashtra flood death toll rises to 24

Flash floods caused by incessant rains have claimed 24 lives in Maharashtra, officials said on Monday.

Janjawan Puri (Maharashtra), July 2 : Flash floods caused by incessant rains have claimed 24 lives in Maharashtra, officials said on Monday.

Maharashtra's Amrawati District is said to be the worst affected.Over 200 villages are completely submerged, and villagers are fleeing the area in to save their lives.

"This is the worst flood we have experienced in the last 50 years. All the houses near the river banks have been submerged. We are stuck here," said Vinayak, a resident.

Ramesh, another resident, said many have become homeless.The local administration has set up camps for the homeless, while some people have moved into schools for shelter.

Rains have also affected other cities in Central India and Andhra Pradesh.
